Law Firm Marketing Brief

PinHawk's Law Firm Marketing Brief is a weekly email designed for everyone involved in law firm marketing strategy. We bring together important news and commentary about the latest trends affecting legal marketing strategy, covering issues that affect top tier firms, boutiques and solo practitioners. Sign up for free subscriptions here.
As mentioned last week, there's lots of good news for the marketing team in the latest Legal Marketing and BD Survey jointly produced by the LMA and Bloomberg News, a copy of which you can read here. The survey clearly shows that marketing professionals have continued to assume and be granted increasing responsibility in shaping strategy, client-relationship management and assorted other client-facing tasks. Significant as these changes are, though, real questions remain about what will happen to the marketing team when the worm turns. This is not just an academic question as there are lots of signs that the economy and in particular M&A activity is slowing. Will all the recent hires to the marketing team be the first ones let go when law firm revenue growth starts to sputter and reverse itself? Shortsighted as this might be, it would certainly seem to be a likely outcome given the well established tendencies of law firm management.
As Nancy Myrland reminds us in her latest blog post, the legal industry remains subject to archaic rules about how law firms can be owned and operated. This creates a difficult dynamic for law firm management, which typically remains firmly under executive committee control, even as the roles and responsibilities of legal and non-legal stiff continue become more overlapping and blurred. Under the direction of the executive committee, most firms invariably allocate upside benefit and downside risk in a way that prioritizes the short term interests of the equity partnership, which suggests the marketing team's recent gains will prove short lived.
On a more cheerful note - just take a look at some of the excellent work that law firm marketing teams have accomplished in recently. This blog post highlights the content marketing efforts at three law firm: Venable, Cooley and Jackson Walker. What is interesting to me is that these successful initiatives have been implemented for practice groups, not on a firm-wide basis. So even when branding and messaging remain problematic for BigLaw firms as a whole, there is nonetheless a huge opportunity to develop highly effective digital marketing initiatives at the practice group level.
Finally, in a world awash with fake news, April Fool's day has lost some of its pleasure and allure. But here's my favorite story of the week from Jaffe PR that highlights an important development in the world of legal marketing.
