Gather the data you need about how your lawyers spend their time. What this long-time consultant recommends calls for much data gathering and analysis, but the results would be revealing. 'The first step is to uncover how the legal department's legal resources are really deployed. Each lawyer and paralegal is asked to complete a spreadsheet showing each major client group on the horizontal axis and the areas of law or type of legal work on the vertical axis. The allocation of time for the last 12 months is expressed as a percentage rather than in hours so that the total, including administration and practice management time, adds up to 100 per cent. By compiling all the responses, the general counsel can see, for example, how much commercial work is required by the sales department.'

Your in-house job is safe from AI software. 'In his ELM Amplify session AI: The Replace vs. Enable Debate, Vincent Venturella addressed these fears [that lawyers may have of being unemployed by AI] by talking about the myths and realities of artificial intelligence, including some very concrete reasons why AI isn't likely to take the place of legal professionals for the foreseeable future.'

Interview minorities for jobs, and push your law firms to do so also. 'implementing the Mansfield Rule, which requires a certain percentage of candidates from underrepresented groups to be interviewed for job openings. CLDs [corporate law departments] can implement this rule in their own hiring and can urge their firms to use it. Some may even refuse to hire firms that do not have the Mansfield Rule in place.'

Processes and people are more important than software. 'There's definitely this fantasy around technology coming to the rescue. People think maybe things aren't working well at the moment, there's no real process in place, but if we just find the right software to fix it, then things will be great in no time. In reality, most companies need to clean up their house a bit before technology can deliver what they're expecting.
If you're not thinking first about what behaviors and processes need to change in order to get the result you want, new technology just becomes an expensive way to maintain the current mess.'
