The proper use of the word

Prognosticators in the legal market could learn a thing or two from Bill Gates. I don't mean about technology, but instead the definition of "revolutionary." "Gates said that in his lifetime he has seen 'two demonstrations of technology that struck me as revolutionary.' The first was the arrival of the graphical user interface in 1980, - 'the forerunner of every modern operating system, including Windows.'" The second is the GPT AI model. Gates was born in 1955 and there are arguably many significant advancements in technology in his lifetime. I do think there is room for the Internet as a third revolution, but I digress. I can hear Ingio Montoya's words echoing over many a legal story in my lifetime. Words are supposed to have meaning. Lets not exaggerate and abuse them. The end?

Speaking of exaggerations and word abuse, we have this next post. I would love to see some more specifics on Professor Stephen Gillers' declaration of "The end of legal services as we know it." I cannot tell from Jean O'Grady's post if he was referring to generative AI or Chat GPT in general or the "AI powered" CoCounsel product specifically. I daresay that regardless - legal services, as we know them today, are still in full force. I would argue a year from now legal services, as we know them today, will still be in full force. If we follow the majority of technology trends, we will see AI impact the legal market, after the rest of the world. And even then legal has been surprisingly resilient on keeping the age old work model. Also keep in mind the LexisNexis survey which shows 81% of lawyers are not using AI and 14% of lawyers and 10% of law students don't even know what we're talking about. Does AI have the possibility of reshaping legal? Yes it does. But calling for the end of legal services as we know it now is a tad premature. Birds of a feather

Stan Garfield's post today gets to the third of five Cs - Connect. Stan pulls in some great quotes, "Connection is the essence of knowledge management," (Tom Stewart) and "We will always tell more than we can write down," (Dave Snowden).
