Too Much $$, Too Little Benefit?

I haven't gotten through all 31-pages of this paper, but the title summarizes my experiences to date on many of the AI options out there for legal. Pricey, enterprise-licenced "solutions" with limited ways to experiment and calculate the impact and value abound. "Tech giants and beyond are set to spend over $1tn on AI capex in coming years, with so far little to show for it. So, will this large spend ever pay off? MIT's Daron Acemoglu and GS' Jim Covello are skeptical, with Acemoglu seeing only limited US economic upside from AI over the next decade and Covello arguing that the technology isn't designed to solve the complex problems that would justify the costs, which may not decline as many expect." What is legal spending and what significant is there to show? With a hat tip to Shift*Base, download this PDF and read more at Goldman Sachs: GEN AI: Too Much Spend, Too Little Benefit?

How much is too much?

Joe Patrice asks a very depressing question in his post today. It's based on the Goldman Sachs report I just highlighted above. Joe writes, "No one is dumb enough to spend a hundred billion dollars to improve incrementally." He goes on, "If the bottom falls out of GenAI development, then that's not great for legal. But assuming it trundles along just getting marginally better at what it does already, that's probably still a good deal for legal." But I guess I have to ask, "How much IS legal already spending for minor and incremental improvements?" And how much is too much for marginally better, for incremental improvements? AI is a broken wand

I think Niusha Shafiabady has been reading some of the feeds from legal when she writes, "For some, AI feels like a magic wand that predicts the future." But realists note that AI has some problems. Niusha expands on these issues:
Trouble in the real world
Bias in the training data
Being out of date
When the data isn't right
Niusha closes with this truth, "As (future) users of AI and technology, it is important for all of us to be aware of these issues to broaden our perspective on AI and its prediction outcomes concerning different aspects of our lives." Read more at REAL KM: AI is not a magic wand - it has built-in problems that are difficult to fix and can be dangerous
