Kicking the tires
After reading the top story of the PinHawk Weekender was about AI risks, Patrick McKenna shared with me his post on LinkedIn. In it he writes, "Given that the ILTA Conference just ended last week, I heard from an attendee that at one session they asked for a show of hands from those CURRENTLY using Gen AI, with less than 50% raising their hands. It would appear that many are just KICKING the tires on vendor products." Patrick heard correctly. All the people I talked to about AI would further reinforce the tires are being kicked. Bigger firms are perhaps kicking those tires harder and faster, but the analogy works. He goes on to write, "I've been told that Clients are making it a condition of their OUTSIDE COUNSEL GUIDELINES, that firms disclose ALL the AI, of any kind, that they are currently using and IDENTIFY any risks." That is also true. I got to see my first such guidelines last week. I have also been told that may firms are getting a lot of RFPs with genAI questions (where some match the outside counsel guidelines and some that contradict!) Patrick asks us, "So imagine NOW giving your client a list of 700+ risks and then ASKING for consent. Conversely, imagine NOT disclosing any of those risks and receiving consent." How many lawyers are window shoppers?
With a little mixture of Seinfeld and ILTACON, Joe Patrice writes, "But after a lot of conversations and demos and press releases... the 'killer app' for generative AI in legal - at least right now - might be the user experience it provides." I didn't walk away with that impression, but it is an interesting consideration. The tech has been around them, at least as close as their bubble will allow. Does AI have a sharp enough edge to pop the bubble? With consideration to his article's title, I guess my question is how many lawyers are window shoppers? Adding a philosopher
Anthony Grayling and Brian Ball write about philosophy and artificial intelligence and the link between the two. If you are familiar with the1956 computer program, Logic Theorist, you might know that it drew upon Principia Mathematica by the philosophers Alfred North Whitehead and Bertrand Russell.
