Down with silos

Change management is so much of what we do on a daily basis that I think we can all use some help with it. Todd Tierney's post isn't legal specific, his ten proven strategies to address organizational silos is applicable to law firms' legal and administrative areas. He notes, "Siloed departments frequently result in inconsistent messaging, service delivery, and customer interactions. By promoting cross-departmental collaboration and alignment, organizations can ensure a seamless and consistent customer experience across all channels." Some firms are better at this than others. Depending on where your firm falls, you may want to read more at KMWorld: Breaking Down Barriers: 10 Change Management Strategies to Eliminate Organizational Silos

This argument is delusional

Articles about AI making jobs are as plentiful as those that claim AI is taking jobs. Alan Pelz-Sharpe casts his vote into the latter as he claims to do some myth busting. He starts out strong, "In theory, AI automation can free workers from the mundane and create new and more exciting jobs. Similarly, AI automation can help fix inefficiencies, reduce bottlenecks, boost accuracy, and improve jobs. But in reality, that seldom happens. Processes are not fixed; rather, workers' roles are simply replicated, and a human worker is replaced by a digital worker." He continues, not mincing any words, "Another argument I hear from tech leaders is that AI will actually create more jobs. This argument is delusional. If you automate a job, then by default, that job is removed from the pool of jobs available." And he concludes, "As an industry, we need to be more honest about the hard reality of AI and automation, its potential, and its often clumsy misuse." ChatGPT=friend?

Noor Al-Sibai's post was a bit of a bizarre one. I never gave it much though, but I suppose you can addicted to most anything and that includes ChatGPT. OpenAI and the MIT Media Lab's new joint study indicates that the longer you use it, "more likely you are to become emotionally dependent upon it." The post continues, "Though the vast majority of people surveyed didn't engage emotionally with ChatGPT, those who used the chatbot for longer periods of time seemed to start considering it to be a 'friend.' The survey participants who chatted with ChatGPT the longest tended to be lonelier and get more stressed out over subtle changes in the model's behavior, too." With a hat tip to Stephen Abram, read more at The_Byte: Something Bizarre Is Happening to People Who Use ChatGPT a Lot

Big enthusiasm gap

This post puts several things I've been thinking about genAI into perspective - especially in the legal market. Jim Rapoza writes, "If one listens casually to the discourse around generative AI today, it would be easy to come to the conclusion that everyone is clamoring for more AI capabilities and can't wait to use them in their daily lives. But a recent ZDNET/Aberdeen survey into AI assistants shows a clear disconnect between how much vendors are pushing AI assistants and how much users actually want these capabilities -- at least for now." All I can say is that it's a good thing we don't pay Stephen Abram by the link as we read more at ZD NET: Only 8% of Americans would pay extra for AI, according to ZDNET-Aberdeen research
