You're with stupid

I'm not sure I buy into Doug Austin's post this morning on the causes of AI hallucinations. I think he and I are on opposite ends of the sanctions argument. Doug writes, "Clearly, sanctions - even severe sanctions - are not providing enough of a deterrent to reduce (much less eliminate) case filings with AI hallucinations." If the two examples he gave of "severe sanctions" were the norm and not the exception, maybe they would be working better. And no where does he mention laziness or ignorance of AI users. Failure to check an AI generated citation, failure to notice your surrounding and drive off a bridge are examples of laziness (or outright stupidity). If you're researching how to cut salt from your diet and follow the AI advice to replace sodium chloride with sodium bromide and poison yourself, it's out ignorance or lack of subject matter expertise (or again, outright stupidity) that is the issue. Doug says, "It's a societal problem and case filings with AI hallucinations are just a single manifestation of this problem." If we count laziness and ignorance as the societal problems, then I'm in. I'll have to do more research the "Cognitive Miser Hypothesis" he cites. Doug defines it as "People tend to prefer the path of least cognitive effort, making them more likely to accept the system's recommendations without further thought." That could certainly be a definition of laziness. Read more at eDiscoveryToday: What's Causing These AI Hallucinations and How to Fix It: Artificial Intelligence Trends

Analog AND digital

I do appreciate the analog in my personal and professional lives. I don't try to have a screenless day once a week as Stephen Embry confesses to in his post today. I like my tech too much for that. When my children were much younger I always loved the time they spent at my in-laws place in the Thousand Islands. There were no computers, no gaming consoles or TVs there and it reinforced their love of reading, playing outdoors and their own imaginations. As CIO of a law firm, editor of the PinHawk Law TECHNOLOGY Digest, I certainly wouldn't count myself as a luddite in anyway shape or form. But I will admit that my work day starts with my printing a copy of my Outlook calendar. By the end of the day, it has my to-dos, notes and everything else from the day written on it. Take a moment and read more at TechLaw Crossroads: Going Analog: Is It Just for Luddites?
