Law Firm Marketing Brief
|
|
- Psychologists rely on something called the Perceived Stress Scale to measure individual stress levels. In the age of COVID, the questions on the standard stress test sound kind of quaint - how many times in the last month have you felt nervous? how many times have you felt unable to control the important things in your life? By these measures, I'd imagine most of us are now on the verge of the upper bound of the PSS.
- Taking a Break. Just imagine how much worse it must be for those who are responsible for leading a multi-national law firm through this global pandemic. So it seems eminently reasonable that marketing consultant Simon Marshall advises law firm leaders in this recent article, "it's time to take a break." Given the lack of control over so many fundamental issues, Marshall says it's critical for the management team not to succumb to burn out.
- Non-Lawyers Take Command. Mark Cohen highlights another trend in leadership in his most recent blogpost. Looking at recent management moves by Deloitte, UnitedLex and Axiom, Cohen notes how leading law companies are increasingly filling top management positions with senior leadership talent from outside the legal industry, prioritizing expertise in technology and digital transformation as part of the essential skill set. So yes, by all means, law firm leaders should take a break, but don't be surprised if you find someone has taken your place when you return....
- Whither the Office? Bruce McEwan has some interesting observations in this week's blogpost about the pros and cons of WFH during the pandemic. McEwan cites one survey which found that employees who have struggled most in a WFH environment are those who tend to be most introverted and conscientious, whereas those who are easygoing and agreeable, tend to flourish. Given the personality traits of most high-powered lawyers, it's reasonable to suppose there will be a stampede back to the office once the pandemic has finally lifted. But McEwan thinks it's also likely most firms will look to substantially reduce the office footprint in the coming years, with the result that WFH will remain an important feature of most lawyers' working lives. That seems to line up with the views of a majority of law firm administrators who responded to a recent survey conducted by the ALA. As ALA director April Campbell summarized the poll results, firm leaders see the pandemic as presenting firms "with a real chance to improve the legal service delivery model."
- More Work for the Marketing Team. Among other changes brought about by the pandemic, this brief post from Intapp notes that more work is landing in the lap of the marketing team than ever before, with 12 and 14 hours days becoming the norm. That's consistent with what we're hearing anecdotally, and makes sense given how COVID-19 has disrupted normal marketing channels while also ratcheting up the pressure to find new business opportunities.
- Advice from the Experts. This week we get some contrasting advice from the marketing experts. Sally Schmidt, who has successfully navigated through the legal market's ups and downs for decades, suggests that now is the time to return to marketing fundamentals. The world may be upside down but what client doesn't like receiving a hand-written note from outside counsel? On the other hand,
the Mad Clientist over at BTI Consulting sees this as time to revise your tactics, with shorter and more frequent content delivered straight to the client's email in-box.
- The Convergence of BD and D&I. Finally, in this week's blogpost, Dave Harvey of LawVision provides some practical insight on how to better of align your firm's efforts to promote Diversity & Inclusion alongside Business Development. You're either part of the solution or part of the problem, as Eldridge Cleaver put it. And that very much includes the marketing department, which now more than ever, has a chance to be an important part of the solution.
