californiA line In the sand

The new California laws regulating AI that go into effect in 2027 are interesting.
- Chatbots can't pretend to be real people
- When it comes to children, chatbots must remind them to take a break every three hours and cannot generate sexually explicit content
- Companion AIs must have "safeguards for people in mental distress"
- Companies must "report how they handle situations involving suicidal ideation and self-harm"
- "Large platforms" must disclose when AI is used to generate content
- Increases penalties for "deepfake" pornography

A patching we will go...

Nothing like 175 plus vulnerabilities to patch! "Microsoft released fixes for 175+ vulnerabilities, including three zero-days under active attack: CVE-2025-24990, CVE-2025-59230, and CVE-2025-47827." Be safe. Go patching! Read more at HELPNETSECURITY: Microsoft patches three zero-days actively exploited by attackers

Shaking it out

These quotes sum everything up rather nicely. "Though we anticipate that the type of work our associates do will be affected by the growing use and effectiveness of generative AI, our projections for first-year associate hiring over the next two years remains steady." "They're still trying to figure out how it will affect attorney workloads. ... It's almost a trial-and-error thing." "Everyone is waiting to see how generative AI is going to shake out in the context of Big Law: whether clients push back and what the impact is on billing rates." It's a refreshing change from the posts I see where the assumptions are AI rules. In the real world, things have not shaken out yet.
