Mini-GPTme
Microsoft is keeping its options open for a locally run AI, announcing the availability of a "lightweight AI language model named Phi-3-mini, which is simpler and less expensive to operate than traditional large language models (LLMs) like OpenAI's GPT-4 Turbo." Microsoft says its small size is "ideal for running locally" and it could bring AI "to a smartphone without needing an Internet connection to run it." Read more at

Noncompetes
I've been watching the debate and conversation on noncompete clauses, waiting for an actual outcome. Well howdy we got that in spades now! The FTC has banned noncompete at the lower end of compensation. If you make $151,164 or more a year and are in policy-making position, the noncompete is still good. The Chamber of Commerce is not happy citing the ruling as "a blatant power grab that will undermine American businesses' ability to remain competitive," and has vowed to sue the FTC. Read more at

Thoughts on the arms race
I was going to pass up Joe Patrice's post on AI, except that his title kept nagging at me. I went through all the other new posts in my feed, I kept coming back to: "The AI Arms Race Continues." It is an interesting phrase and indeed there is a competition between companies for the superiority of their AI tools. But can we draw other analogies to the arms race? If we start at the top, nationstates' nuclear arsenals are huge and we have the capability to destroy our planet 55 or so times over. We have MAD - mutually assured destruction. So we have them, but we don't use them. (Queue a joke about Lexis and InterAction and shelfware) Is AI the same now? Firms have it or talk about it but don't use it? Is the second generation of tools that much better? Do they have a superior ROI then the early tools? Just some things I wondered as I read more at
